Thursday Snippets, 19 April

A busy 21/22 April weekend at ASC. Club fleet race on Saturday, with division starts from 2pm. Also annual Verna Templeton junior trophy race with all ASC juniors encouraged to participate. Sign on at 9.30am for 10am briefing session, and junior green fleet program from 1pm. Sunday 22nd there is a casual ASC Family and Friends Picnic day. For members, family and friends from 11am to 3.30/4ish. On-water sailing with club training boats for adults, youth and juniors available for members and their guests. Land based activities. BYO lunch. Special parking arrangements have been arranged with Parks Victoria for sunday given late notice of an event at Lakeside Stadium. First option is to park in the spaces in Aquatic Drive, the road behind the club. If no spaces available then parking will be permitted on the gravel areas next to the club under agreed conditions. If you display a Parks Vic sporting club permit no fee is payable. Those who don’t have this permit may park on the gravel areas but MUST purchase and display a ticket from an Aquatic Drive meter AND obtain from the club rooms a label to put on the dashboard which confirms you are attending the club’s picnic event.

On Saturday 28th April club working bee from 9am to lunchtime and no club racing. Plenty of jobs to clean up the clubrooms and boatyard in preparation for our winter sailing season. On Sunday 29th is our monthly end of month sunday social sailing day from 10am – 3pm.

The ASC Winter Season commences Saturday 5th May with Winter Series club race at 2pm and Information Session at 1.15. Details and online Registration for sailors from other clubs now available on www.albertsc.org.au.

Thursday Snippets, 12 April

On Saturday 14th April we have Summer Series 6 club race at 2pm. An Autumn Learn to Sail program for adults and juniors is programmed to commence on sunday 15th. Anyone interested who has not registered needs to contact Don McKenzie via training@albertsc.org.au or by phone on Thursday. There are a number of ASC juniors sailing in Optimist and Laser 4.7 class fleets in the Victorian Youth Championships at Sorrento across the weekend. Hopefully, the forecast stronger winds moderate and there is some good sailing on the weekend.

Be ready for on-water and land based activities. The event has been created on our ASC facebook which allows you to share and invite friends. Also on 5th May there will be a Race Starting Procedures, Starting Flag System and Course Setting coaching session from 10.00am to 11.30am. We need more people who can handle starts on our Start/Finish boat. Also more generally for members to understand how race starts work. ASC AGM on Saturday 12th May, followed by an informal meal in ASC clubrooms. New committee members are needed to replace a number who are retiring. Nomination form has been emailed out, with copies available at club and on website.

Finally the Discount Sea Mart business in Elizabeth Street is closing down end of April. 20% off Sale of all stock. If you need ropes, sailing gear, fittings, etc. get in while some stock still available. Also anyone who has a Discount Sea Mart gift voucher needs to use it ASAP.

Thursday Snippets, 5 April

Our next ASC sailing day is on Saturday 7th April with Summer Series 6 club race at 2pm. This is the start time for Saturday club races in Autumn and Spring following the change back to AEST in Victoria. Also on Saturday a number of our Sabre class sailors will be sailing in the annual Victorian Sabre Association event at Mordialloc.

Over Easter three ASC members sailed in the Victorian Impulse class championships at Lake Boga. Paul Farrell finished 5th and Steve Dunn 8th overall in a fleet of 25 Impulses. This week, Wednesday to Friday we have had another successful ASC school holiday program with 15 juniors sailing in club Ozi Optis, including 4 boats loaned from our neighbours at APYC.

We need some new committee members for the 2018/19 year. Speak to our commodore John Whelan or another committee member about joining the committee or assisting via a non-committee role.

Thursday Snippets, 29 March

Our next scheduled ASC sailing day is on Saturday 7th April with Summer Series 6 club race at 2pm. Weather prospects look good for Easter. Don McKenzie and some other members will be down for a casual sail on the Lake from mid morning on Easter Saturday.

On the weekend of the Grand Prix (24/25 March) a number of ASC juniors participated in the Victorian Schools Sailing Championships at St Kilda. The St Michael’s junior secondary team finished runnerup in Division 2 with Anna Cripsey, Philip Cripsey and Max Commeignes half of the six member team. Another good result for ASC junior members.

Thursday Snippets, 22 March 2018

The Albert Park Reserve was closed to the general public for the F1 Grand Prix on tuesday 20th and re-opens on Tuesday 27th March. Our next scheduled ASC sailing day is on Saturday 7th April with Summer Series 6 club race at 2pm (following change back to AEST in Victoria). No doubt there will be some down sailing socially on Easter Saturday if the whether is reasonable.

Albert Sailing Club has been well represented at Wooden Boats Festivals in Victoria in the last couple of months, with some good results and feedback. Steve Dunn’s ‘Grumpy Boy’ took out a couple of the major trophies at the Inverloch Wooden Boat Festival at end of January. Jaemie Wilson’s wooden dragon “Siena” was the overall winner of the Classic Yacht division of the Geelong Wooden Boat festival on the March Labour Day long weekend. Items on both boats are in our Summer Mudpuddler newsletter on www.albertsc.org.au.

ASC was also well represented at the Optimist class titles at Blairgowrie on the March long weekend. Finn McMahon sailed well to win Victorian State Championship. Phillip Cripsey the 11 year old and under State Champion winner.

Thursday Snippets, 8 March 2018

Labor Day long weekend, so no scheduled club racing at ASC. Expect that some people will come down to the club on Saturday from 10am for casual sailing. Also, we have junior green fleet from 1pm – 4pm.

A number of our juniors are sailing in the Victorian Optimist championships at Blairgowrie across the weekend and we wish them well.

The next club race day is on Saturday 17th March 2018. Don’t forget that there is no sailing on 24 March 2018 due to the Grand Prix and that you will not be able to access the club from 19 March to 26 March 2018.

The latest Mudpuddler was distributed this week. Online version is on the home page of www.albertsc.org.au. Big thanks to editor Naomi and contributors for another bumper issue.

Thursday Snippets, 22 February

Plenty on at Albert Sailing Club on 24th/25th weekend. Summer Series 3 club race and another junior Green fleet sail in the afternoon of Saturday 24th. On sunday we have our monthly social sailing day and continuation of the Summer Learn to Sail program from 9.30. There is a ‘cold front’ with possible showers and a wind change predicted for sometime Saturday. Suggest check forecasts Friday evening on http://www.bom.gov.au/vic Summer Series and training programs continue on Saturday 3rd March.

Thursday Snippets, 15 February

Club sailing day on Saturday 17th with Learn to Sail program in morning, junior Green Fleet from 1pm and Summer Series 2 club race at 2.30. The club will be open Friday twilight from around 5.30 to 9pm. ASC members and visitors are invited down to sail and/or socialise with the Australian Sailing Women’s & Girls Group. Another full weekend on 24th/25th February weekend. Summer Series club race and junior Green Fleet on Saturday. Thursday Snippets, 8 February

Saturday 10th February there is full day of sailing at Albert Sailing Club. From 9.30 we have Week 2 of the Summer Learn to Sail course, with 7 adults and 5 juniors. Late morning there is a junior Green Fleet start racing session, then 1 – 4pm Week 1 of the Term 1 junior Green Fleet program with 11 pre-enrolled. At 2.30 is the ASC Summer Series 1 club race.
There are other activities in Albert Park Reserve on Saturday to note. The Queen’s Commonwealth Games Baton relay is coming through the park at 9.30am, and Lakeside Drive on the eastern side of the Lake will be closed till 10am. Athletics Victoria have the final of their 2017/18 Shield competition at Lakeside stadium across the day. Parking useage in Aughtie Drive behind ASC will vary across the day with peak likely to be in the afternoon. If parking in Aughtie Drive is full, you can park in gravel areas either side of club if you have a Parks Vic Sports Club parking permit. If it is full and you do not have a 6 monthly or annual pass, then stop kerbside behind ASC clubrooms and come inside to Galley and seek out Rod Thomas. Rod has a small number of passes which can be purchased from him for parking on gravel area next to the club if required.
A number of our junior Optimist sailors are sailing in the Schnapper Point Regatta across the weekend and we wish them good sailing. The February ASC General Committee meeting is in our clubrooms on Tuesday 13th from 7.30pm. Finally, there is a Responsible Serving of Alcohol course provided at no cost by City of Port Phillip on evening of 5 March. We always need people with RSA accreditation to serve in Doug’s Bar. Thursday Snippets, 14 December

On Saturday 16th December there is Junior Green Fleet Sailing program from 1pm and others down at ASC for some casual sailing. Victorian Women & Girls in Sailing groups sailing on lake from Boatshed at 6pm on Friday 15th followed by drinks at ASC. Wednesday 20th the club will be open from 1pm till sunset or a little later. Have an afternoon or late afternoon/twilight sail. Bringown boat or club boats available for members. An RS Zest has been booked for tryout sails. Sausage sizzle style BBQ and drinks on ASC balcony from 6.30ish.

This is final Snippets for 2017. Best wishes for the upcoming festive period. The ASC program re-commences with club race on Saturday 13th January.
