Return to Winter Season on the 21/22 July weekend. Till the end of August there is club racing from 2pm on saturdays and the VIODA Winter Coaching program 1 to 4pm on sunday afternoons. The VIODA program resumes with good numbers again with 46 juniors from Victorian clubs sailing in Open, Intermediate and Green Fleet Optimist groups. On the 22nd from 1pm VIODA will also have a Swap, Buy and Sell for sailing gear and Opti parts plus a session on the pathway from Optimist to Laser and Waszp classes for parents and visitors.
Beyond Albert Park Lake, the 2024 Olympics is starting. The world’s top Sailors will be vying for medals in 10 classes off Marseille on the meditteranean from 28 July to 8 August. Entries are restricted to one per country in classes in which the country meets qualification standards. Australia has representatives in 8 of the 10 classes, with the strongest prospect in the ILCA7 (Laser) class with Matt Wearn the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist and current world champion. Also some good prospects in Men’s sailboard and women’s kites. Australian Sailing has a useful guide on https://www.australiansailingteam.com.au/olympics with regular Facebook posts and Links to Athlete Profiles, Race Schedule and How to Watch. RacesĀ should be able to be watched on one of the with 40 simultaneous TV channels on 9 Now and multiple channels on Stan, with multiple shorter races fron 8pm on a number of the days.
On Saturday 18 August Australian Sailing is conducting an Assistant Instructor training course at the Albert Park Boatshed. We currently have Helen and Shinsuke from ASC signed up, with scope for 1 or 2 others from our club. We are looking to develop up our club Instructor resources. Contact Rod if you are interested.
