Thursday Snippets, 7 May

Our club’s 4 week Autumn Series commences on Saturday 7 May. Autumn Series 1 club race is at 2pm, with Information session in clubrooms at 1.15. In the morning there is ASC ‘green fleet’ and Sorrento SCBC junior training groups from 10am, with club training boats available subject to flag officer approval. The forecast is for moderate northerly winds on Saturday, with showers to follow from sunday into early in the week.

On 14 May we have the ASC Annual Trophy Presentation at 5.30, followed by Annual General Meeting at 6pm, and a visit to nearby Rosco’s Restaurant in St Kilda Road afterwards. A key agenda item at the AGM is the election of ASC general committee for 2016/17, with all positions open. The highest priorities will be to find a new Commodore and a new Treasurer. New general committee members also required. Completed forms need to be with our secretary Bill Avallone by 7 May, and are being progressively placed on the club’s window at the top of the main stairs. Speak to a current flag officer (Don or Steve) or Bill if you have queries or need help in completing a nomination form, .

Post the AGM we have a meal at Café Rosco (407d St Kilda Road, near corner with Toorak Road). Sailing and non sailing individuals and family members are invited and will be most welcome. $20 per head payable on the night. The subsidised meal will be a garlic/herb pizza bread starter, a pizza/pasta meal with drinks(wine and soft drinks) and tea/coffee. Option to pay extra for a different main meal, dessert, or other drinks. There is a sheet for bookings on Doug’s Bar in ASC clubrooms or email sailing@albertsc.org.au. The pizza/pasta menu is on the front page of ASC website and on the booking sheet. Pizza/Pasta selections are to be included on booking sheet by 5pm on 14 May.

There was a well attended function in our ASC clubrooms last Saturday evening to celebrate the 80th birthdays and sixteeth wedding anniversary of Don and Dot McKenzie. Thursday Snippets, 28 April

Our Autumn sailing season commences on Saturday 30th April with a club trophy race in the afternoon and for this week only briefing at 1.45 and starts from 2.30 or soon after. The annual Masters Rowing Regatta is being conducted on Albert Park Lake until 2pm, so sailing till 2pm is restricted to northern basin, and the club race start times and possibly our course is being varied.  (Note : no junior green fleet sailing on 30 April). Autumn Series commences on Saturday 7 May, with training groups in the morning and afternoon race starts back to winter starting time of 2pm.

There are a number of training programs at ASC for juniors over coming months which should be worthwhile.
* ASC green fleet sailing 10 – 12 noon on 4 Saturday mornings from 7 May. Sailing in own or club boat.
* Sorrento Sailing Club winter program on 5 Saturday mornings from 30 April with training 10am to 1pm, and some staying on for ASC club race at 2pm. Sailing in own Optimist or Minnow. Option for ASC juniors with own Optimist or Minnow to be involved. Email sailing@albertsc.org.au if interested.
* Optimist Class training on sunday afternoons being organised by Owen/Mark from ASC with Opti Association. Details nearly finalised and to be communicated out soon.
* School Holiday programs . APYC’s Junior Wintersail, 8 – 10 July. ASC September school holiday program.  Own boat or leased ASC Ozi options.

Thusday Snippets, 21 April

On the Anzac Day long weekend ASC has a club working bee in the morning from 9.30am. and casual social sailing in the afternoon from 1pm. Visitors most welcome for the social sailing. Jobs for the working bee include : cleaning of club powerboats and sailboats; cleaning and tidying inside and outside of clubhouse; boatyard and decking maintenance; and possibly some painting. Come prepared in old clothing.

Thursday Snippets, 14 April

On Saturday 16th April we have our annual Verna Templeton Trophy Race for juniors in the morning and in the afternoon an ASC club trophy race at 2.00pm, with Information session at 1.15pm.

For the Verna Templeton trophy event Juniors (and their support crew) need to sign on upstairs in clubhouse by 9.30am Then rig Pacer boats, briefing session and crew allocations at 10.00 am, followed by short races of up to 20 minutes in Pacer class boats from 10.30 in in the northern half of the Lake. Juniors at all levels of experience are encouraged to participate with each boat to have a skipper and one or two crew. The Autumn Trophy Race will incorporate a Pacer class Trophy race where newer members can skipper or sail with own crew or a more experienced member in a club Pacer. You can signup to skipper or crew on a Pacer by sending an email with your details to sailing@albertsc.org.au

On Saturday 23rd we have a club working bee in the morning from 19.30am and casual social sailing in the afternoon from 1pm. Visitors most welcome for the social sailing. Our Autumn sailing season resumes on Saturday 30th April.

Thursday Snippets, 7 April

Saturday 9th April we have Summer Series 7 at 2.00pm, with Information session at 1.15pm. Green fleet sailing for juniors and adult members from 9.30 to 11.30 in own boat or club training boat.

There is a special Meeting of Members at 11.30am on Saturday 9 April to discuss the club and its operations in the 2016/17 club year and beyond. We need a good turnout of members. Most of the important issues to be addressed are in the Newsletter mailed out over the past week. The Newsletter is also available online from www.albertsc.org.au.

Saturday 18 April from 10.30am we have our annual Verna Templeton trophy event for juniors at all levels of experience. Juniors need to sign on at 9.30am. Briefing session at 10.00 am, then short races of 15 to 20 minutes in Pacer class boats will be sailed in the northern half of the Lake. That afternoon at 2pm there is an Autumn Trophy Race This will incorporate a Pacer class Trophy race where newer members can sail with more experienced in club Pacers. Details of how to signup in next week’s Snippets.

April ASC general committee meeting is in our clubrooms on Tuesday 12th at 7.30pm. All members welcome.

Thursday Snippets, 31 March

Our ASC Summer series re-commences on Saturday 2nd April with Summer Series 6 at 2.30, with club open by 10am. On sunday 3rd we have a social sailing day from 10am to mid afternoon, with assistance from some experienced club members appreciated as always. Club training boats will be available for use both days, subject to weather and a club flag officer approval. Also a ‘green fleet’ session from 10am to 12 noon for adults and juniors with club Instructors on hand.

At 3am on Sunday 3rd the Summer Daylight Saving period finishes and clocks are turned back an hour. One consequence for those who race at ASC is that the star time for all club Saturday races from 9 April to 1 October changes to 2pm, with information session at 1.15pm.

The next ASC Mudpuddler Newsletter has been compiled. It will be available online, and collected on Saturday for those down at the club, otherwise  posted Monday. In it you will find Notice of a Special Meeting of Members at 11.30am on Saturday 9 April to discuss the club and its operations in the 2016/17 club year and beyond. Also notice of Annual General Meeting/ Season Trophy Presentations and Social Evening on Saturday 9 May. We are seeking a good turnout of experienced and newer members to both.

Thursday Snippets, 9 March

Our next club race is scheduled for Saturday 2 April. with Summer Series 6.

On the Labour Day long weekend there will be some members down for a casual sail on Saturday from around 10am to early afternoon. Quite a few members will be away sailing in events including Victorian Impulse titles at Newhaven, Victorian Optimist titles at Sandringham and Marley Point overnight race on the Gippsand Lakes.

The F1 Grand Prix takes over the Albert Park Reserve from 17 – 20 March. There will be a sailing mini regatta on the sunday afternoon from 3pm. Entries have closed for the regatta and credential were posted on 9 March to 36 ASC members participating ether sailing, race management or junior parent. There will be no access to the Albert Park Lake Reserve and Albert Sailing Club from 14 March to 21 March (inclusive), other than for people with event credentials.

The March edition of our quarterly Mudpuddler Newsletter is being compiled. Our editor John Whelan would appreciate sailing related photos, articles and items of interest being sent to mudpuddler@albertsc.org.au by lunchtime Wednesday 16th.

Thursday Snippets, 3 March

Autumn has arrived and we have Summer Series 5 club race on Albert Park Lake on Saturday 6th from 2.30pm. Also another Green Fleet improve your sailing session from 10am for adults, youth and juniors, with option of afternoon ‘green fleet’ sailing. Additional car parking arrangements will again apply. First option is to park as normal in Aquatic Drive or Albert Road. Otherwise parking possible in gravel areas next to the club for cars with Parks Victoria parking permits. The club has also reserved some car spaces in Aquatic Drive for use if other options not available. If parking in the reserved spaces, leave bollards and tape in place, and no need to purchase parking ticket but place $3 in bowl on ASC galley servery.

On sunday March 6 all roads in the Albert Park Reserve will be closed until 11:30am for the Grand Prix Cycling Criterium event. For people travelling to the club on Saturday 6th/ Sunday 7th the traffic in Punt Road from River Yarra to Commercial Road will again be heavily impacted by closure of Punt Road and Toorak Road intersection for tramworks.

On sunday 28 February we had a very successful community service Fun Day at ASC for families and friends of children with brain tumours. The next day we received an email “A massive thank you to Don and all the volunteers who helped on the day. You all worked so hard and it was really appreciated. The March ASC general committee meeting is in our clubrooms from 7.30pm on Tuesday 8th. All members welcome.

We are trying to establish a junior school holidays sailing program for 3 days in early April. Details will be on www.albertsc.org.au mid March, with emails out to a many families juniors as we can.

March is going to be a quiet month for sailing on Albert Park Lake. Our next club race, after the race on the 5th March is on Saturday 2nd April. In between is Labour Day long weekend, F1 Grand Prix weekend and Easter. Note that the Albert Park Reserve will be completely locked down from 12.01am of Tuesday 14th to 12.01am on Tuesday 21st March for the F1 Grand Prix. Some roads will be closed two weeks either side of this period with access generally available through steel gates on Albert Road.

We all hope for some rain in March for our gardens, ovals, and Albert Park Lake.

Thursday Snippets, 25 February

Summer Series 4 club race on Saturday 25th February from 2.30pm. From 10am Green Fleet improve your sailing for adults, youth and juniors, with option of afternoon ‘green fleet’ sailing for members who have sailed in few if any club races. Club training boats available all day from 10am, subject to weather conditions and club flag officer approval.  Additional car parking arranged in response to significant athletics event at Lakeside Stadium. First option is to park as normal in Aquatic Drive or Albert Road. Otherwise parking possible in gravel areas next to the club for cars with Parks Victoria annual or 6 monthly parking permits. The club has also reserved some car spaces in Aquatic Drive marked by bollards for use if other options not available. If you park in the reserved spaces, after parking leave bollards and tape in place, no need to purchase parking ticket but place $3 in bowl on ASC galley servery.

On sunday 28 February we have a Monthly sunday social sailing day with club open from 10am to 3pm. This is followed by a community service Fun Day at Albert Sailing Club for Brain Tumour Ahoy group, for families and friends of children with brain tumours. Any help from members for couple of hours or more in period 3 to 8pm would be appreciated. Contact David Temby or email commodore@albertsc.org.au if you can assist on sunday 28th.

For people travelling to the club on Saturday 25th/ Sunday 26th be warned that traffic in Punt Road from River Yarra to Commercial Road will be heavily impacted by closure of Punt Road and Toorak Road intersection for tramworks. Suggest alternative routes be considered.

Entries for the Grand Prix Sailing event to be sailed from 3pm on sunday 20th March, need to be at the club through mail or in box provided in ASC tower by this sunday 28th. An entry form, passport size photo and indemnity form is required for each participant, junior parent of race management assistant. A number of club training boats are available for hire on first in basis, with request included on Entry form.  Late entries to ASC by mail or hand delivered by Saturday 5th March, possible but not preferred. Thursday Snippets, 18 February

On Saturday 18th we have Summer Series 3 club race in afternoon from 2.30. Green Fleet improve your sailing for adults, youth and juniors, in the morning from 10am, with club training boats available. Regular parking in Aquatic Drive, with gravel areas next to the club only for dropoff of boats and gear.

The Summer Learn to Sail course was concluded last sunday (14th). The trainees handled the course well and we look forward to seeing them out on the water. Thanks to our lead instructor Geoff Saliba and the members who assisted with the program.

On sunday 28 February we have a Monthly sunday social sailing day 10am to 3pm. This is followed by a community service Fun Day at Albert Sailing Club for Brain Tumour Ahoy group. We need some members to help out on sunday 3 to 6pm with rigging/sailing/packing up of club Status boats, and 6 – 8.30 for BBQ and packup. Also cleanup of Status boats next two saturday mornings. The Albert Park Lake club level Grand Prix Sailing Regatta event is to be sailed on sunday of Melbourne F1 Grand Prix, 20th March. Open to club racing and green fleet level adults and juniors, with juniors to have a parent/adult carer to attend to assist. Also need two or three people for on water patrol boat duty. Entry at no cost for club members includes day pass to Grand Prix Sunday from 10am allowing 3 or so hours to check out other events and activities before sailing event. A number of club training boats are available for hire on first in basis. Entry & Indemnity form needed for each person including those involved in race management. Further information and forms on www.albertsc.org.au. Also hard copies on desk at top of ASC stairs. Entries are needed by 27February, with late entries by 5 March.
