Ticked over into the new financial year with club race on saturday 5th and a Hall Hire on sunday 6th with exclusive use of upstairs clubrooms. More welcome rain to continue bringing the Lake water level up.
* The club sailing day on 5th has Winter Series race from 2pm, with club open from 10.30. Information session at 1.15 and sign on at Albert Sailing Club.
* On Sunday 6th the clubrooms are being hired for a private function on Sunday and so there will be no access upstairs or to the galley at all on that day. Members are able to access changerooms and the boatyard. If accessing the boatyard lock the gate behind you when you enter and leave as external people will be accessing the toilets downstairs and so the wire gate should remain locked at all times.
* Volunteers needed for Albert Park Sailability group.
If you’re free on Monday mornings from 10am to 1pm and would like to join a group of volunteers who take disabled people sailing, then please message APYC club member John Fairfax on 0493 771057.
You don’t need to be a member of a club to participate. Sailing skills are desirable but not necessary, we can teach you to sail the Hansa sailing dinghies that are designed especially for disabled sailors.
The group meet at the boat shed between Albert Park YC and Albert SC next to the cafe.

Thursday Snippets, 26 June

Another full weekend of sailing with Winter Season Handicap race on saturday 28th from 2pm and on sunday 29th afternoon the last week of VIODA Optimist Winter Coaching program.
For the saturday race sign on and 1.15 Information session at APYC.
* Albert Sailing Club conducted another successful Top of the Lake Regatta on the 21/22 June weekend with good racing in mild winter weather, light to moderate winds. Seventy entries across the weekend. The results have been posted under Race Results – All on the Sailing – Race Results tab of www.albertsc.org.au. The senior (adult) Top of the Lake overall winner was the Impulse class winner Jonathon Pulham. The junior Top of the Lake winner the Optimist class winner Acklin S. Their photos with Race Office Cindy and presenting flag office Rod are attached. More photos from the Regatta will be published on our Albert Sailing Club Facebook in the coming week.
* On the first sunday of June the VIODA Team Racing Championship was sailed from Albert, with 30 junior Optimist sailors, coaches and families involved. Check out the video of one of the short races posted on Albert Sailing Club You Tube. The teamwork and use of the Rules of Sailing are well displayed.

Thursday Snippets, 19 June

Saturday 21 June (pm) and Sunday 22 June for Albert Sailing Club’s annual Top of the Lake Regatta. Online entries by 11pm on Thursday 19th. Late Entries  on morning of 21st and 22nd in clubrooms (not preferred). ASC and APYC members need to complete online entry to sail saturday afternoon , and for sunday if sailing the full regatta. Parents of juniors need to present a completed Junior indemnity form to the Registration desk on top of clubrooms stairs by 12 noon on saturday.

* The Regatta has multiple short course races from 1.15 saturday and sunday from 10.30 to mid afternoon, with the Information session on saturday in the ASC clubrooms at 12.30. Join us for the BBQ and drinks after racing in our clubrooms on saturday. Regatta Entry link and details on www.albertsc.org,au.

* Regatta Volunteers: It would be great if we could have a few more to assist with the regatta: on-shore cleaning the decking/ramp in the morning of both days, and then assisting sailors launching and retrieving boats. If you can assist, primarily before racing starts (approx 12.45 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday, and then later in the afternoon on Saturday and from around 12 p.m. on Sunday) please email Cindy on admin@albertsc.org.au

* There was a small improvement in the Lake water level with some rain in early June, and as at wednesday 18 June was 32 cms below the regular full level. The water level continues to require partially raised centreboards and a drop down to water level for boats launched from foreshore decking. There is also likely to be some floating weed after a recent lake harvest, with the extent in the sailing area dependent upon wind direction in the days preceding the Regatta.

* Thanks to all who assisted with the Regatta working bee last Saturday. The club looks clean, tidy and welcoming and reflects positively on our club.

* Congratulations to the winners of Albert Sailing Club Perpetual trophies for the 2024/25 season., presented at the Annual General Meeting in May. A listing of winners is under the Club Champions subtab of the Sailing tab on www.albertsc.org.au, with photos on Albert Sailing Club Facebook.

Thursday Snippets, 29 May
This weekend 14th & 15th June sailing from Albert Sailing Club both days. Then ASC’s Top of the Lake Regatta on Albert Park Lake 21/22 June. Time to get entries in.
* Winter Handicap race on 14th at 2pm, with Sign On and Information Session at 1.15 at APYC clubrooms.
* VIODA winter coaching program Block 2 on sunday afternoons from Sunday 15th. Entry to Albert Park Reserve including Aquatic Drive behind Albert Sailing Club will be closed from 7am to 11am.on Sunday for an Athletics event on the road in the Park.
* Regatta Working Bee from 10 a.m. Saturday 14th primary jobs: clearing leaves/weeds from around the clubhouse, clubhouse cleaning (window sills, front and back stairs, chairs on deck etc), general tidying up of clubhouse and surrounds. Also a couple of taller people to assist in putting some screening shade-cloth along the wire gates in the downstairs passageway. If possible, bring leaf blowers, rakes, rubber gloves etc. Morning tea provided.

* The water level of Albert Park Lake has improved a little after long weekend rains, but continues to be down and lower than we would ideally like. Sailing in our Winter Season has been continuing weekly with partially raised centreboards and a drop down to water level for boats launched from foreshore decking.

Thursday Snippets, 29 May

This weekend 31 May and 1 June sailing from Albert Sailing Club both days. Upcoming  ASC’s Top of the Lake Regatta on Albert Park Lake on 21/22 June
On saturday 31 May it is a Winter Championship race at 2pm, with Sign On and Information Session at 1.15 at Albert Sailing Club clubrooms. Visitors from other club as always most welcome.
Sunday 1 June the VIODA winter coaching program has short course Teams racing morning and afternoon for Open and Intermediate Optimist sailors, and Green Fleet training session in the afternoon. Come down to the club to watch the action or have a look for a few minutes at a time on the club webcam on www.albertsc.org.au.

There was a shifty moderate northerly wind on saturday 24th. Some of the action is in a video clip loaded onto Albert Sailing Club You Tube.

Unless, we have significant inflows from rain the Regatta is likely to be compromised. There will be updates in Snippets emails and our club Facebook in the leadup to the Regatta weekend.

No programmed sailing  on Albert Park Lake on for the King’s Birthday long weekend.

Thursday Snippets, 22 May

The Winter Season is now well underway. Saturday 24th there is Winter Handicap Series from 2pm with Sign On and Information Session at 1.15 in front of APYC  clubrooms. At lunchtime there will be a free club BBQ amd after post race snacks for our club members to recognise their efforts as volunteers at our club as part of the Australian National Volunteers week.

On sunday 25th 1 to 4pm there is another of the big VIODA Optimist Winter Coaching program sessions and a training session for a group of teenage Laser sailors.

The Lake water level is still down and just a little up from the 17 May level. We will continue to review weekly and advise on any program changes.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 June Albert Sailing Club’s “Top of the Lake” Regatta for dinghy sailing classes is programmed.  The holding of the Regatta is subject to improvement in the Lake Water level, with a decision to be made in the next couple of weeks. Thursday Snippets, 15 May

Saturday 17th May has Week 2 of the Winter Championship Series with first start at 2pm and Sign On and Information Session at 1.15 in our ASC clubrooms. The Lake water level is still down and dropped a couple of centimeters since sailing on the 10/11 May weekend. We will continue to review water level weekly and advise on any program changes on or before sailing days.

On Sunday 18th the VIODA Winter Coaching program continues 1 to 4pm. Additionally there will be a group of six ILCA4/Laser juniors in for a Winter Coaching program It was pleasing to welcome 50 junior Optimist sailors and their families from other Victorian clubs for week 1 on the 11th May. The photo  is from the briefing with the Green Fleet Optis of the less experienced Opti sailors in the background on the decking ready for launching.

The big event on the world sailing scene from 10 to 17 May is the ILCA/Laser World championships being sailed from Qingdao in China. This is the first Olympic class World Championship of the year. It has attracted 237 of the world’s best sailors from 40 nations, with 12 Australian men in the ILCA7’s and 8 Australian women in the ILCA6’s. Albert Sailing Club has a connection with Riley Cantwell having sailed a number of Winter Season at Albert in Optimists and Lasers, and Victorian ILCA6 champion Casey Imeneo at least two of our annual regattas. For the first 3 days they had fog, current, barely a breath of wind, and no racing !

Thursday Snippets, 8 May

Saturday 10th May has Week 1 of the Winter Handicap Series with first starts at 2pm and Information Session at 1.15 at APYC. Our Annual General Meeting for members is in our clubrooms at 5pm, preceded by presentation of Perpetual Trophies for 2024/25 at 4.45. All documentation for the AGM is on The Club tab of www.albertsc.org.au including Notice of Meeting, Commodore and Treasurer reports, and committee nomination forms. There will be a light informal meal after the AGM.

The VIODA Winter Coaching program for the junior Optimist Optimist class is being hosted by Albert Sailing Club on sunday afternoons starts at 1pm on sunday 11th May. We welcome 45 juniors, their boats, and families for sessions on and off the water.

The Lake water level is still down and similar to level for club races in April. We will continue to monitor water level and advise on any program changes on or before sailing days.

This week photo is of the Salter family. dad and son, sailing their Mirror Maglia Rosa in their first club race in late April. Their is a short video clip of this on Albert Sailing Club You Tube.

Albert Sailing Club’s ‘Top of the Lake’ Regatta for dinghy sailing classes is scheduled for the weekend of 21/22 June, subject to the Lake Water level. The Notice of Race will be out early June. In other news. The State MP for Albert Park Nina Taylor recently visited the Albert Park Yacht Club and the Sailing Precinct. A post on her Facebook on 6 May refers to The Albert Sailing Club is a great community based club which provides facilities and support throughout the year for members to sail dinghy class boats on Albert Park Lake. The attached photos are of Nina and Graeme Cox, the APYC Commodore, in the APYC clubrooms. Our ASC Flag Officers have previously met with Nina. The compliments in this post are equally valid for Albert Sailing Club, even though likely to have been intended to be about APYC.

Thursday Snippets, 24 April

The water level in Albert Park Lake is still down and just enough for a club Trophy Race on saturday 26th. Similar to water level for last club race in early April. Information Session at 1.15 in Albert Sailing Club clubrooms for 2pm start. We will continue to monitor water level weekly and advise on ‘state of play’. Hoping that prediction of some rain later in the week comes to pass.
There will be a club Working Bee from 9.30am on saturday 26th. Focus will be on our boatyard and clubrooms. Also one or two people in wetsuits to volunteer to assist some actions on the Lake edge.

This week’s photo is of ASC junior member  Hamish Gilsenan sailing BIG waves off Sydney Harbour’s South Head on Easter Friday He was with a group of 5 other Laser sailors, and a coach boat. Hamish’s plan is to go to Europe mid year and sail Laser full rig in World and European ILCA Youth championships and hopefully a few other regattas, subject to funding and University considerations.
