Thursday Snippets, 3 March

Saturday 5th March is a regular club sailing day with Summer Series club race at 2.30, and club open from 10am. No galley this week, with tea and coffee still an option.
The next club day is then Saturday 19th March with sailing followed by our postponed Trivia Night. for members, families and friends. From 6pm for 7pm Trivia in your own team or as part of a team assigned on the night. Details and registration via link on www.albertsc.org.au

The ASC Members planning survey closes on Monday 7th March. If you haven’t completed the link it is here. All completed questionnaires which have email address go into a draw for a not to be missed Gold Class movie pass for 2 (limit of 1 entry per member).

Last weekend was a busy one for ASC members at the Lake and elsewhere. The 150th celebrations for AYC and sailing on the Lake was well attended and went off well. There are photos and a video on the APYC Facebook. Thanks to the ASC volunteers who assisted, with particular mention of Lesley Scott who played a significant role in recording of finishers and compilation of results for the Ladies Bracelet race. We also had members sailing Laser Masters Nationals at Westernport and in Sail Sandy regatta at Sandringham Yacht Club. Special mention for Nigel Leishman who has progressed from Optimist to sail his first regatta in a Laser 4.7 which included a third place in a fleet of 9 4.7’s in race 5. Well done Nigel.

Thursday 10th March access to Aquatic Drive closed most of the day with erection of Grand Prix Overpass in Albert Road Drive. Lakeside Drive (eastern side of Lake) closures for Grand Prix works midweek days progressing to include some weekend days in period leading up to Grand Prix week 4 – 10 April when all roads in the Park will be closed.

March long weekend State championships for a range of classes including : Impulses (Somers), Optimists (RYCV), Pacer and 125 (Yarrawonga)

Thursday Snippets, 23 February

This week.  Saturday 26th February Albert Sailing Club will join in the Celebrations of 150 years of Albert Park Yacht Club and sailing on Albert Park Lake.
Also last Friday 19th an  online ASC member survey email was sent out. If you are a club member and have not as yet completed the survey the link is in that message or is here.

The 150th celebrations on saturday are a milestone event for competitive and non-competivive sailors, and spectators.
Lunch to be taken and boats to be partially rigged by 12.50. Official welcome and proceedings from 1pm in and in front of APYC clubrooms, with the Victorian Governor in attendance. Albert Sailing Club will make a special presentation.
Boats then launched at 2pm for a non-competitive Sailpast at 2.30 to salute the APYC Commodore and non sailing guests and spectators. Option of Ladies Bracelet Trophy Race at 3.00pm.

Saturday 5th March ASC club sailing day, with ASC/APYC Summer Series race at 2.30.

Thursday 10th March  Access to Aquatic Drive closed most of the day with erection of Grand Prix Overpass in Albert Road Drive.

Thursday Snippets, 17 February


A busy couple of weeks ahead. Saturday 19th ASC club sailing day, with ASC/APYC race at 2.30.  
Saturday 26th February Albert Sailing Club will join in the Celebrations of 150 years of Albert Park Yacht Club and sailing on Albert Park Lake.
The 150th celebrations are for competitive and non-competitive dinghy sailors from Albert Park sailing clubs and visitors from other clubs and associations, and for non sailing spectators. The aim is for lunch to be taken and boats to be partially rigged in front of ASC and APYC clubrooms  by around 12.45. From 1pm there will be an Official welcome and proceedings  in and in front of APYC clubrooms, with the Victorian Governor in attendance and ASC to make a special presentation. Boats then launched at 2ish for a 2.30 Sailpast of the fleet. There is then a Ladies Bracelet Trophy Race at 3.00pm. If not already registered for theSailpast go to https://www.apyc.org.au/150th.html. Registration will assist with planning and next week’s email communications from APYC.

Last saturday’s Top of the Bay Regatta at Altona attracted a fleet of 60 boats in ideal conditions. Our Lake sailors sailed well with Ron Fergusson winner of Division 3 and Jonathon Pulham from APYC and Paul Farrell from ASC first and second respectively in the large Division 5 fleet.

Thursday Snippets, 10 February

Friday 11th February we have Twilight Sailing and a catered BBQ on our ASC club decking, with trophy presentations for our successful junior ASC Quest Stonehaven Cup. Come and sail own boat, with club training boats available for members 4 to 6.15pm . BBQ option whether sailing or not from 6.30pm and if coming email commodore@albertsc.org.au with numbers for catering. The organised weekend sailing is the Top of the Bay Interclub Regatta at Altona Yacht Club on Saturday 12th at 2pm. Altona YC is a pleasant place to visit with boats rigged 12 – 1pm, and free parking next to the club. No organised club sailing on Lake on 12/13 February weekend.

Thursday Snippets, 3 February

Saturday 5th February there is a regular ASC sailing day with Summer Series club race at 2.30, and club open from 10.30. Come at or just before midday for an informal Commodore’s Update and Q&A on current and upcoming ASC issues and activities, in the clubrooms from 12 noon for 30 to 45 minutes.

Surplus Boats – Albert Sailing Club wants to give Members and ASC Friends the opportunity to purchase surplus older boats currently racked at the Club before we advertise more widely . There is a wooden Impulse, Mirror and Sabot, and a full rig fibreglass Laser. All for sale at a good low price. Saturday 29th January and 5th February ASC Summer Series club race at 2.30.
Sunday 30th ASC social sailing day 10.30am – 4.00pm. Club training boats available for member use, subject to weather conditions and approval on the day. Including juniors 8 – 12 years sailing own boat or club Ozi Opti in morning and teenager/young adult Laser and Zest training session from 1.30.

Saturday 22nd and 23rd January no ASC club sailing being the weekend preceding Australia Day.
Weekend regattas for sailing dinghy classes at clubs including McCrae and Yarrawonga.
Port Melbourne Yacht Club club aggregate race at 1.30 on saturday with visitors welcome.
Festival of Sails, mainly for keelboats with entertainment at Geelong.

Saturday 29th ASC Summer Series re-commences.
Sunday 30th ASC social sailing day 10.30am – 4.30pm, with a junior/young adult Laser and Zest session from 1.30. Club training boats available for member use, subject to weather conditions and approval on the day.

Thursday Snippets, 13 January

Week 2 of Commodore short series from 2.30 on saturday 15th , with Information Session at APYC at 1.45 and club open from 10.30am. The club Galley is not open this week , but Doug’s Bar will after sailing.

The good news for this week is that the Team ASC junior crew were clear cut winners of the 92nd annual Stonehaven Cup regatta sailed in RS Quest boats from 5 clubs at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron last week. Hamish, Mietta, Scarlett and Maddy sailed consistently well to record wins in 7 of the 9 short format heats, and the two invitaion races. A fuller report on the win plus some photos has been posted on the Albert Sailing Club Facebook. Well done to the Team ASC crew and the members and parents who supported their participation in the longest running junior regatta in Australia.

Thursday Snippets, 6 January

Happy New Year. The Albert Sailing Club summer season re-commences with sailing on saturday 8th January.  Week 1 of Commodore short series from 2.30, with Information Session at ASC at 1.45. Club open from 10.30am, with club training boats available for member use from 11.

This week the annual Stonehaven Cup regatta for junior crews under 19 years of age is being sailed in RS Quest boats at Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron. The ASC Quest has been transported to RMYS and  after 6 of 10 short format races the ASC Quest team of Hamish, Mietta, Scarlett and Maddy has shown good sailing skills and teamwork to record 5 wins and a third in the 11 boat fleet. We look forward to them finishing off the series well.

Roads in the park are being re-sealed over period to mid January, with access via Albert Road steel gates on weekend days and most weekdays. Further details ASC website.

The ASC COVID Safe Plan is also updated on the website as significant changes in Government directions effect in ASC operations occur. Curren key messages are. Don’t come to the club if you have possible COVID symptoms or await test results. Everyone need to checkin in club foyer with QR code or complete paper form. All above 12 years of age needs to be double vaxxed to go upstairs in clubrooms. Masks need to be worn indoors except when eating or drinking, a young child or have a valid exemption.

Various club regattas and class championships across February and March.
Annual Inverloch Wooden Dinghy Regatta has been moved from its traditional Australia weekend dates to 19 and 20 February.

Thursday Snippets, 16 December

Friday 17th December we have Twilight Sailing with BBQ on decking at Albert Sailing Club with forecast finally for some of Melbourne’s best Summer weather with a maximum of 30 degrees and a light-light moderate southerly sea breeze. ASC members, families and friends are invited to join us for a sail (in own boat or a club boat) and/or a BBQ and refreshments. For catering let Cindy know of likely numbers via commodore@albertsc.org.au. If you do not have a Parks Vic annual parking permit be aware of midweek parking restrictions and options as set out below*.

Wednesday 22nd December casual midweek sailing if weather is OK, am and pm till 4ish. For adults, youth and junior members, with Junior options as per link on https://albertsailingclub.wildapricot.org/

There will be Road closures in the Albert Park Reserve till 17 January for resurfacing of the Grand Prix track. Best entry is through Main Gates off Albert Road. Current advice is that there will be no vehicle access to Aquatic Drive and the roads from the gates to Aquatic Drive on Thursday 6 January and Tuesday 11 January. If we receive advice of further closures effecting access to Aquatic Drive we will place information on the Home Screen of www.albertsc.org.au

In some positive news the Aquatic Weed cutting harvester will be operating on the Lake until mid January. If out on the Lake give him a wide berth.

As for midweek car parking restrictions and fees
– Gravel areas next to club are for drop off only.
– Aquatic Drive behind club $5.50 per hour for maximum of 3 hours till 6pm, then $5.50 for up to 9pm .
– Albert Road service road 250 metres or so from club. Hourly parking with ticket until 6pm, then no fee after 6pm.

The Albert Sailing Club program resumes on saturday 8th January.
Thursday Snippets will take a break for a few weeks. Compliments of the season to everyone and see you in early 2022.
